Position Description
Definition
LVMPD internships are unpaid volunteer positions. LVMPD internships are offered only to current college students, not granted to individuals merely wanting to obtain work experience and must be performed in return for college credits toward graduation. Internships are generally performed on a part time basis, for instance 20, hours per week, within one semester. No free housing is offered, regardless of whether the successful candidate is an out-of-state student. The following LVMPD units have accepted interns in the past: Crime Scene Investigations (for students interested in pursuing a career in CSI), Cold Cases, Missing Persons, Victim Services Unit, Recruiting, Forensic Laboratory, Emergency Management, and Counter Terrorism. However, actual availability of internships in the different LVMPD sections varies by semester based on mentor availability.
Interns have no law enforcement power. They are students currently in an advanced stage of their college studies desiring to pursue a career in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field upon college graduation. Typically assigned a mentor, interns acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while providing non-commissioned, non-hazardous support and/or research services to the LVMPD unit assigned.
