Responsibilities

Seeking a self-motivated Fire Protection Engineer skilled in providing detailed fire alarm and detection engineering designs, fire modeling, fire hazards analysis, exemptions, equivalencies, analysis, and associated construction oversight for installation of designs at NNSS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support design projects throughout their entire lifecycle (initiation, planning, design, execution, and closeout).
  • Provide detailed design packages (drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, etc.) supporting equipment procurement and construction of fire protection systems, including analysis of existing/new facilities, fire modeling, fire hazard analysis, fire protection assessments, exemptions, and system design efforts.
  • Devise solutions to complex technical problems, resolving conflicts among customer expectations, code requirements, and design needs, possibly utilizing unconventional technology and materials.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and advise on organizational goals.
  • Prepare and review design drawings, specifications, calculations, fire hazard analyses, and fire protection assessments, with expertise in fire modeling and life safety features.
  • Identify risks and design features to prevent, control, and mitigate fire effects.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations using software like Hydraulic Analyzer of Sprinkler Systems.
  • Model and evaluate fire scenarios with software such as PyroSim, CFAST, and Fire Dynamics Simulator.
  • Support fire alarm and detection system design, including Notifier systems.
  • Assist with beneficial occupancy inspections.
  • Ensure processes and deliverables comply with laws, codes, and policies.
  • Research and interpret relevant codes, standards, and DOE orders daily.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, fire authorities, and facility managers.
  • Maintain knowledge of NFPA, IBC, IFC, DOE orders, and CFR standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited engineering program (Fire Protection, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) or equivalent STEM degree; or NCARB certification, or PE license.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, with preference for experience in nuclear facilities and fire hazards analysis.
  • Experience with fire modeling, underground facilities, or nuclear facilities highly preferred.
  • Primary work location: North Las Vegas, Nevada, with up to 50% travel to NNSS.
  • Work schedule: 4/10s Monday-Thursday (subject to change).
  • Pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background checks required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q security clearance, U.S. citizenship required.

Salary

$99,340.80 - $149,011.20 annually.
