Police Recruit

Police Recruits that successfully complete the Police Academy will be promoted to a vacant Police Officer position when it becomes available. The Police Officer position has a five-step pay schedule. The starting pay is Step 1 - $34.85 per hour or $72,488 annually (as of 7/17/2025, subject to change). Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Police Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Police Officer. This is a civilian, limited-term, non-commissioned position assigned only to those individuals who have successfully passed the entry level testing and met all criteria to become commissioned police officers.

Essential Functions

Exemplify the Department Values, both on and off duty. Meet or exceed all training academy standards when completing all work, physical fitness course requirements, and practical work problems assigned by Police Recruit Training Academy Staff. Study and comprehend academy training materials. Meet or exceed initial firearms and other weapons qualification standards; maintain said standards throughout duration of the academy. Meet or exceed training academy standards on conduct and behavior.

Conditions of Employment Incumbents are required to:

  • Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards for Police Recruit throughout the duration of the academy.
  • Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance.
  • Meet and maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons.
  • Upon academy graduation, work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483. Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of the first exam for the position. Must be a Citizen of the United States by the date of the first exam for the position. Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code 921-922. Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.

Additional requirements include successful completion of:

  • Polygraph or CVSA (Voice Stress) Exam
  • Extensive Background (Life History) Investigation
  • Oral Board Interview
  • POST Physical Fitness Examination administered both prior to hire and within 30 days from the start of the Academy
  • Complete Medical Exam and Drug screening
  • Psychological Examination

Applicants will need to attest to the following on the application form to be considered for employment:

  • The applicant is not disqualified from serving as a peace officer.
  • The applicant has not been discharged, disciplined, or asked to resign from employment with a law enforcement agency for certain conduct; and the applicant has not resigned from employment or otherwise separated from employment with a law enforcement agency for certain conduct; and the applicant has not resigned from employment or otherwise separated from employment with a law enforcement agency while an investigation concerning certain alleged conduct was pending.

In addition to the job application, qualified applicants need to complete an examination through the National Testing Network (NTN). Applicants must achieve an average of 70% or higher in their NTN examination in order to be considered to proceed in the recruitment process. Achieving an average of 70% or higher does not guarantee an invitation to the physical fitness examination. Completed online job application and NTN examination must be received no later than the close date on the job announcement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of correct English usage, including spelling, punctuation and grammar in order to write reports, memoranda, legal descriptions and observational descriptions. Basic math calculations. Ability to exemplify the City's values. Learn city, state, and federal laws, statutes, ordinances, and court decisions related to law enforcement activities. Learn, use, maintain, and apply associated safety practices for lethal and non-lethal weapons and equipment to include meeting and maintaining qualifications on Department-approved firearms and other weapons. Learn pertinent rules, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to law enforcement activities. Learn 400 codes; commit to memory and operate a radio using such codes. Learn and apply appropriate levels of force in a variety of situations; defend and protect self in physical confrontations. Learn to recognize and evaluate situations and unusual occurrences and determine appropriate action to be taken; to anticipate situations and problems and initiate effective strategies; recognize safety hazards and exercise caution in all actions. Learn to operate an vehicle safely in normal and emergency situations. Learn criminal investigation principles, practices, and techniques. Communicate effectively, both orally (in person, radio, telephone) and in writing, with a variety of people in various situations, including testifying in court, using persuasion, tact, self-restraint, common sense, judgment, and strategy. Read, write, and dictate clearly and concisely using grammatically correct English. Read, understand, recall, and interpret complex documents; collect, organize, and analyze a variety of information and apply results as relevant to law enforcement activities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Make good decisions, using sound judgment. Maintain confidentiality. Perform basic math calculations. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following defensive tactics activities, subdue and restrain resistant persons, lift, drag, or carry persons or objects, and meet Department Medical Standards

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

General Physical Requirements All physical and mental conditions sufficient to meet all standards required for successful completion of the entire Police Recruit academy training, including but not limited to shooting a Department-approved firearm; deploying other Department-approved weapons; maintaining Department-approved firearms qualification; and engaging in defensive tactics. Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents. Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations, including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications, in accordance with Department standards. Dexterity and mobility sufficient to perform the following: operate standard police and office equipment; operate motorized vehicles; climb stairs; sprint from one location to another during code response and run for an extended period of time. Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, jump, and reach overhead. Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain persons and drag, lift, or carry persons or objects. Endurance sufficient to perform the following: sit at personal computer terminals or in a vehicle for extended periods of time; stand and move around while working indoors or outdoors; wear a mask or other protection equipment for extended periods of time. Alertness sufficient to be aware of surroundings at all times.

Working Conditions The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside. The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals, walking and working on slippery and uneven surfaces. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The worker frequently is in close quarters, narrow aisles, passageways and crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. The worker may be exposed to infectious diseases or other possible infectious materials. Exposed to blood. Exposed to fecal matter. Exposed to OPIM. The worker is required to function around unruly or physically disrupting individuals.
