Fire Safety Response Duties

Personnel assigned fire safety response duties must be able to safely perform the following tasks, with or without reasonable accommodation:

Emergency Operations

• Rapidly respond to emergency incidents
• Perform fire suppression activities
• Conduct basic rescue and extrication support operations
• Assist with patient assessment and movement
• Operate emergency response equipment
• Enter and exit response vehicles quickly and safely

Equipment Handling

• Lift, carry, push, or pull equipment weighing 5075 pounds
• Move or drag an adult patient weighing up to 220 pounds with assistance
• Advance charged hose lines and deploy fire extinguishers

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

• On and off required personal protective equipment (PPE) in a timely manner
• Operate while wearing required firefighting PPE
• Operate in environments with restricted visibility and mobility

Physical Activity

• Perform sustained physical activity for 1020 minutes or more
• Bend, kneel, crawl, stoop, twist, reach, and work in confined or awkward positions
• Climb grades up to 25 degrees

Cognitive Demands

• Follow verbal and written instructions
• Communicate effectively in high-noise environments
• Make time-sensitive safety decisions

Environmental Conditions

Personnel assigned to this safety sensitive role must be able to safely perform duties under the following environmental conditions:

• Extreme heat or cold
• Smoke or dust
• Loud noise
• Low visibility
• Uneven or unstable surfaces
• Outdoor weather exposure
