Job Description

The Office of General Counsel at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas seeks an Assistant General Counsel. Under the general direction of the Vice President and General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel will provide legal advice and services to senior academic and administrative officers concerning UNLV's legal rights and obligations, with a focus on litigation and threatened litigation for all units of the University, including the UNLV School of Dental Medicine and the UNLV School of Medicine.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a litigation caseload from beginning to end, including pre‑litigation disputes in civil/constitutional, employment, personal injury, professional liability, and general liability cases; coordinate with outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Prepare court pleadings, legal memoranda, and other filings; conduct discovery, including depositions.
  • Provide oral and written reports and recommendations to the General Counsel and other University administrators; coordinate responses to governmental compliance inquiries and administrative information requests.
  • Represent the University in trials and hearings before state, federal, and local courts, and before state and federal administrative and regulatory agencies.
  • Advise on enforcement of disciplinary standards and policies for faculty, staff, and students, including hiring, tenure, and student conduct matters.
  • Draft agreements, legal opinions, correspondence, policies, and other documents in compliance with federal laws, state laws, and NSHE directives.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks related to employment and other compliance matters (e.g., FMLA, ADA, HIPAA).
  • Interpret state and federal laws, the Board of Regents' Handbook, NSHE guidelines, and University policies, including shared governance.
  • Stay abreast of legislation, legal trends, and best practices; review court decisions and proposed legislation.
  • Supervise attorneys and/or support staff in the Office of General Counsel, as directed by the General Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. degree with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in litigation before state and/or federal courts.
  • Admitted to practice law in Nevada on date of employment.
  • Personal and professional integrity, excellent communication and relationship‑building skills, and political acumen.
  • Ability to provide expert, comprehensive legal advice directly to University administrators without close supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Seven (7) or more years of related experience.
  • Experience within a higher education institution or a Nevada public agency.
  • Experience in civil rights/employment law and having tried cases to verdict.
  • Availability to travel occasionally and work weekends/evenings as required.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: $144,075.00 to $161,662.62, depending on experience and preferred qualifications.
